Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service San Diego CA
312 AM PDT Wed Jun 4 2025
.SYNOPSIS...
Moisture over southwestern California will slowly decrease today
and Thursday with decreasing chances for afternoon and early
evening showers and thunderstorms for the mountains and high
desert. Then dry for Friday into next week. There will be a
warming trend through the weekend with high temperatures peaking
Sunday and Monday at a few to around 5 degrees above average for
coastal areas to 5 to 10 degrees above average for the mountains
and deserts. Night and morning coastal low clouds will cover much
of the valleys into Thursday, then not spread as far into the
valleys for the weekend into early next week as the marine layer
becomes shallower.

.DISCUSSION...FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE...
SAN DIEGO...WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO
COUNTIES...
.SHORT TERM (Today through Friday)...
There will be greater drying of the well above seasonal
precipitable water values for the coast and valleys for today and
Thursday with slower drying for the mountains and deserts. Chances
for afternoon and early evening showers and thunderstorms for the
mountains and high desert will decrease for today and Thursday
with chances for measurable rainfall decreasing from 15 to 25
percent today to 10 to 15 percent for Thursday. Chances for one-
half inch or more of rainfall are mostly 5 percent or less for
today.
The marine layer will remain around 3000 feet deep into Thursday
morning followed by a gradual decrease in marine layer depth into
early next week. Night and morning coastal low clouds and fog
will cover much of the valleys into Thursday morning. Drizzle will
continue into early this morning with the more widespread light
measurable amounts for the San Diego County coast and valleys.
High temperatures will slowly warm through the weekend. Friday
high temperatures will be mostly with a few degrees of average,
ranging from around 70 near the coast to the 80s for the Inland
Empire with 100 to 104 for the lower deserts.
&&
.LONG TERM (Saturday through Tuesday)...
For the weekend, a weak upper level low pressure system will be
centered somewhere off the California coast with subtropical high
pressure across northern Mexico. Slow warming will continue
through the weekend with the heat peaking on Sunday and Monday.
With the warming, high temperatures for Sunday will be a few to
around 5 degrees above average for coastal areas to 5 to 10
degrees above average for the mountains and deserts. High
temperatures on Sunday will range from the lower 70s near the
coast to the mid 80s to mid 90s for the Inland Empire with 105 to
110 for the lower deserts. The marine layer will become shallower
with night and morning coastal low clouds not spreading as far
into the valleys.
There is growing spread in the high temperatures guidance for
early next week with a slow cooling trend for the deterministic
NBM. The cooler solutions move the weak upper low pressure system
off the coast inland into southern California, weakening the high
pressure across the area. The warmer solutions weaken and move the
low pressure system off the California coast farther off the coast
with subtropical high pressure to the south beginning to expand
into southern California.
